Neanderthals protest shrinking glaciers

Europe - 10,000 BC

Newflash - Neanderthals across Europe stripped down today to protest shrinking glaciers and end of their beloved glacial lifestyle. "We used to have at least 3,000 feet of ice here, but global warming has shrunk that to almost nothing" said Dr. Ugh Handsome, self-proclaimed spokesman for the Neanderthal Allied Spaced Agency. "Sea level has risen and flooded our favorite boneyards."

The recent rise in temperature has been attributed by Dr. Handsome to greenhouse gas emissions from campfires and rotting mammoth carcasses. Dr. Handsome wants to see more human sacrifices to prevent further loss of glacial ice.

Disclaimer - any similarity to more evolved humans is completely coincidental.

Lucy, the Global Warming pin-up girl, is clearly distraught from the disappearance of the glaciers. Either that or she is just chewing on her finger.

What warming?

If you measure for 75 years, instead of the "inconvenient" 35 years cherry-picked by AGW advocates, it becomes clear that "global warming" is just not happening over the longer term.

No warming for the last 10 years

GISS data shows no warming over the last 10 years for June and July. NOAA has made severa press releases about "record" global summer heat during 2007, which would appear to not be backed up by the data. Many parts of the southern hemisphere have had persistently well below normal temperatures for the past three months.

Buenos Aires has been averaging about five degrees below normal for the past three months, and had their first snowfall in 90 years.

Changing Temperature Data

In 1975, NCAR reported that temperatures had declined by greater than 0.5 degrees since 1945. The graph and text below is from Newsweek April 28, 1975

However, they seem to have erased this decline on the GISS site.

What does it mean? I suggest you draw your own conclusions.

Cool July

While the AGW forces were busy warning us of impending doom from summer heat, and AGW terrorists were busy shutting down Heathrow Airport - nature was not cooperating. Temperatures were exceptionally cold in the Southern Hemisphere and plenty of cool air in the northern hemisphere.

NASA maps show the earth is cooling

I was looking at the GISS site this morning and discovered a great feature - you can plot temperature trends. During the 21st century, the GISS data shows worldwide temperatures have been generally been neutral or declining as seen in the figures below. Europe, central Canada, Alaska, the US southwest and much of the ocean area have shown a trend towards lower temperatures. Parts of Canada have cooled several degrees since 2000. Only a few isolated places showed strong warming trends.

To generate the plots yourself - go to http://data.giss.nasa.gov/gistemp/maps/

and use the settings shown below, with different projection types.

Below are the same plots with only anomalies greater than 0.5 degrees shown. Tough seeing any indication that the earth is warming, and this data is directly from Dr. James Hansen's web site. It might also be noted that the data only goes through 2006. The large warm bands in the Atlantic and Pacific have since disappeared, so next year's plot will be even more damning to AGW theory.

Correcting global warming maps

The NOAA map below is in the format normally used to represent global temperatures. It is a Miller Cylindrical Projection which shows the entire earth in a single image. This format is convenient but greatly exaggerates land areas at high latitudes. The exaggeration can be calculated as 1/cos(latitude) .

There are two other problems with this map which make it misleading.

  1. The base period starts at 1971, which is a temperature minima. In the 1970s climatologists were warning of an impending ice age, due to rapidly cooling temperatures.
  2. The sensitivity is too high. The data set is not large enough to make meaningful comparisons within 0.5 degrees.

http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/img/climate/research/sst/ani-weekly/5.gif

The maps below correct two of the three of the issues described above. They are equal area projections, and only temperatures which deviate by one degree or greater are shown. As you can see, ocean temperatures are generally close to normal and areas which deviate above and below the norm are about equal in size. Quite a different view of the world from what global warming alarmists would have you believe.
